MANILA -Tycoons Tony Tan Caktiong and Edgar Sia II are kicking off the global expansion of Hotel101 with the groundbreaking of its debut project in Niseko, Japan.
The hospitality arm of listed DoubleDragon Corp. formally started work on the 482-room Hotel101-Niseko located in the world-class ski destination in Hokkaido, northern Japan.
“Hotel101 is the first ever Filipino homegrown hotel chain to expand in other countries outside the Philippines,” the company said in a stock exchange filing on Tuesday.
“Hotel101–Niseko will be one of the largest value hotels in Niseko encompassing 482 signature HappyRooms offering comfort, convenience and accessibility to all types of travelers,” it added.
The project will rise on a 1.2-hectare property and will be built by Japanese contractor Iwata Chizaki, the same builder of Chitose International Airport in Sapporo, Hokkaido.
Hotel101 is a condotel chain, meaning its units are owned by individual investors but rented out like regular hotel rooms.
Tan and Sia were present during the groundbreaking event on Saturday along with Niseko Mayor Kenya Katayama and Kutchan Hokkaido Mayor Kazushi Monji.
After Niseko, Hotel101’s next two international locations will be Madrid, Spain, and California in the United States.
